Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better
In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you battle depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat an egg and jolly up!
Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a great protein source.
If you wish to fight depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.
Grains can be great for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can actually bring you down! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
