Try Using Food to Improve Your Mood
Many of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that actually can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Consume an egg and feel happier!
Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you want to feel better. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.
Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!
So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try several of these instead!
