How to Improve Your Mood with Food
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should stay away from them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are some foods that actually can boost your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat some eggs to feel better!
Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all helpful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.
Grains can be excellent for fighting a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood as well!
See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
