Foods That Make You Happy
A lot of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, can improve your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to find out, are fantastic at fighting depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Try eating some eggs to jolly up!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.
If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your body to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood too!
See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
